Scaly Face Mites (also known as Burrowing Mites) are most commonly found in budgerigars, though many bird species are susceptible. These mites burrow into the skin, feeding on keratin, and leave distinctive honeycomb-like lesions as they penetrate deeper into the tissue around the cere. Over time, they spread down the beak, affecting not only the beak but also the cere and eyelids. They can also attack the legs and feet, and in severe cases, infest the bird’s vent. The tissue damage caused by these mites can be extremely painful, and if left untreated, they can lead to severe beak deformities, making it difficult for the bird to eat or drink, potentially resulting in starvation.

While burrowing mites pose no risk to humans and are harmless to us, they are highly contagious among birds. To contain the infection, it is essential to treat all birds in the aviary. Scatt is a highly effective and easy-to-administer treatment for Scaly Face Mites and air sac mites.
